Welcome to the Sydney Thumbsucking Clinic

Here you will find all there is to know about thumb & finger sucking habits and how it can affect your child's health and development.

Thumb and finger sucking are non-nutritive sucking habits. Other non-nutritive sucking habits include sucking on dummies (pacifiers), clothes, blankies and softies and fingernail biting. Problems can start in the preschool years and dental professionals generally become concerned when the adult teeth begin to erupt at around five years of age.

Prolonged, vigorous sucking can affect the normal development and growth of the jaws, the nasal cavity, speech and breathing, causing:

o Anterior open bite - a gap between the upper and lower front teeth when closing the mouth
o Changes in the shape of the palate
o Overjet - where the upper front teeth are considerably further forward than they should be
o Incorrect swallow pattern
o Mouth breathing

The Sydney Thumbsucking Clinic offers engaging and effective treatment programs to children of all ages to help them kick the habit. Our programs allow children to take an active role in their own treatment. We empower them to decide to stop sucking their thumb.
